ABS-CBN will have to wait next year to see if Congress will finally tackle its bid for a 25-year franchise renewal.
House legislative franchise committee chairman and Palawan Rep. Franz Alvarez said bills to renew ABS-CBN’s franchise won’t be discussed until Congress adjourns session on December 20 for the holiday break.
“Wala na po naka-schedule na committee hearing for the year,” he told CNN Philippines in a text message Wednesday (December 4).
President Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday (December 3) renewed his threat that ABS-CBN’s franchise won’t be renewed.
The network’s franchise is set to expire on March 30, 2020.
“If you are expecting na ma-renew ‘yan (franchise), I am sorry. I will see to it that you are out,” Duterte said in a speech in Malacañang.
The President has repeatedly criticized the network for its alleged bias against him and its failure to air his political ads in the run-up to the 2016 presidential elections.
At least five bills have been filed in the 18th Congress seeking to renew ABS-CBN’s franchise.
