Special envoy for public diplomacy to China Ramon Tulfo believes bilyonaryo Gabby Lopez should sell his family’s majority interest in ABS-CBN Corp. but he should strike out Duterte crony Dennis Uy as a buyer.
“Should the Lopezes sell out their shares and to preclude suspicion on the part of the Duterte administration that it’s playing favorites, ABS-CBN should never be sold to billionaire Dennis Uy,” said Tulfo in his Manila Times column.
“Dennis Uy, who hails from Davao City, has become an instant billionaire during the Duterte administration. Let it not be said that President Digong is harassing ABS-CBN because he wants to hand over the network to Dennis Uy in much the same way the network was given back by President Cory Aquino to the Lopezes on a silver platter,” he added.
Tulfo said Lopez should make the “noble act of selling out” to spare the Duterte administration the trouble of going after the network for his alleged American citizenship.
Former Cabinet Secretary Bobi Tiglao claimed that Lopez was an American citizen when he took over as ABS-CBN boss in 1996 and only applied for dual citizenship in 2004. Only Filipinos are allowed to own shares in media companies.
