Duterte ‘serious’ in selling assets to fund COVID response but Dominguez tells him it’s bad timing

Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque reveals President Rodrigo Duterte is serious in selling government assets to raise billions for the government’s COVID response.

Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque reveals President Rodrigo Duterte is serious in selling government assets to raise billions for the government’s COVID response.

In an interview with ANC’s Karen Davila, Roque said Duterte personally told him that he really needed the cash to sustain his social amelioration program and expand it to five million more families on top of the original target of 18 million.

Roque said he asked one of the buyers what he was willing to pay for one of the biggest properties Duterte wanted to sell.

Roque, who did not name the buyer nor the government property to be sold, said the potential buyer said the property could raise up to P20 billion.

Roque said Duterte was disappointed with the quoted sale price of the government asset which was not even enough to cover half of one month of SAP.

In his May 19 briefing with the Inter-Agency Task Force, Duterte reiterated his plan to dispose government assets but he said Finance Secretary Sonny Dominguez was opposed to making a fire ale because of depressed market prices.

“Gusto ko nga sana magpabili (sell) pero sabi ni Secretary Dominguez na ayaw niya, kasi kung magpabili daw ako ngayon, ang presyo mura kasi it’s the buyer’s option eh,” said Duterte.

“Sabi niya na we’ll get a bad deal at this time. I agree but iyong akin naman that sana kung magkawala-wala na talaga ng pera — ewan ko kung saan tayo magkuha pa,” he added.
