Carlo Katigbak, Mark Lopez could’ve 2nd chance to run ABS-CBN if only Gabby showed ‘remorse’ – Cayetano

Speaker Alan Cayetano revealed that he would have given the third generation Lopezes a new franchise to run ABS-CBN Corp. the “right way” only if their tito, Gabby Lopez, showed some “remorse.”

“When I look at Mark Lopez and look at Carlo Katigbak, I sincerely want to give them another chance because I think their generation is different and I think they have good plans for ABS-CBN,” said Cayetano.

“But could I tell my 70 colleagues, ignore the last 50 years, ignore na yung ginawa sa tax, ignore yung ibigay sa labor, para bigyan ng pagkakataon itong dalawa. Hindi po naman magawa yun. Even si Presidente, tingin nyo po ba?” he added.

In a Senate hearing last February, Katigbak apologized to the President for not airing his campaign ads in the last few days before the 2016 presidential elections. “We are sorry if we offended the President. That was not the intention of the network, we felt that we were just abiding by the laws and regulations that surround the airing of political ads,” the ABS-CBN president and chief executive officer said. Mark is ABS-CBN chairman.

But for Cayetano, this apology from was not enough as ABS-CBN’s big boss, Gabby Lopez, stood defiant during his appearance via Zoom in the House committee on legislative franchises which voted 70-11 to reject ABS-CBN’s bid to get back on air.

“Mr. Gabby Lopez could have done two things – he could’ve not accepted being an officer in ABS-CBN or he could’ve renounced his citizenship before he became chairman. But we heard their testimony. Wala man lang remorse,” said Cayetano.

“Wala man lang nagsabi sa kanila, ‘Boss, baka nagkamali kami, nakinig kami sa abogado namin. Boss, dito sa Big Dipper, sorry, bilyon nawala sa inyo, pero yan ang advice nung tax lawyers. Boss, dito sa labor dapat sinettle na namin yung iba dito rather than TRO (temporary restrainign order) nang TRO. Boss, dito sa Amcara, tama kayo, tingnan n’yo po ang PEZA (Philippine Economic Zone Authority) law. Ang sabi sa PEZA law, bring in investments and more workers,” said Cayetano.

“Yung Big Dipper po dalawa lang kliyente, parehong ABS-CBN. Hindi nagdagdag ng empleyado. So what is the purpose of giving them that big attacks break from 2009 to present and what is the purpose of us all saying it’s legal? Kung gawin din ng Channel 7 yan? Kung gawin din ng Channel 5?” he added.
