Balisacan sees more M&As as companies fight for survival amid COVID-19

Philippine Competition Commission chairman Arsenio Balisacan expects mergers and acquisitions to pick up as companies struggle to remain viable amid the surge in coronavirus cases.

Philippine Competition Commission chairman Arsenio Balisacan expects mergers and acquisitions to pick up as companies struggle to remain viable amid the surge in coronavirus cases.

“We expect a stream of business mergers & acquisitions on the way to economic recovery. Still, many of these will not likely involve mandatory notifications to the PCC, e.g., mergers among SMEs,” the seasoned economist said.

Many corporations have been significantly impacted by the pandemic – struggling to finance operating costs, pay workers and stay afloat in a sea of crisis.

“A merger involving a dominant player in a market is a potential candidate for review,” Balisacan said, hinting a major deal may be in the works.
