Former Senator Antonio Trillanes IV believes this is the real motive of President Rodrigo Duterte in threatening to cut down PLDT-Smart and Globe Telecom by Christmas if they do not improve their service.
“Marami pang pasakalye, Duterte just wants HIS 3rd Telco to get a free ride on the cell towers built by Smart and Globe. That’s why he is now shaking down MVP and Ayala. Gusto ng Davao group na laway lang ang kapital nila, may telco na sila,” said Trillanes on Twitter.

In his fifth State of the Nation Address, Duterte aired a fresh warning against the telecom duopoly: “Kindly improve your services before December. Tell us now if you cannot really improve on it, because I will work…The next two years will be spent improving the telecommunications of this country without you.”
“‘Yung Smart pati itong Globe ilang taon na ito, at ang sagot palagi sa akin, ‘The party cannot be reached’, eh saan pala pumunta ‘yung y**a na ‘yun?,” he added.
The government auctioned off a third telco franchise in 2018 in which DITO Telecommunity of Davao-based bilyonaryo Dennis Uy and China Telecom was the lone, qualified bidder. DITO is supposed to start commercial operations by March 2021.
