Globe CEO Ernest Cu made a surprise appearance during President Duterte’s late-night meeting with the COVID-19 task force Thursday.
The country’s coronavirus response strategy and quarantine rules may be the government’s main concern but Duterte managed to squeeze in a few minutes to follow up on his threat to telco giants Globe and Smart to improve their services or face extinction.
“Si Ernest Cu, presidente ng Globe, siya mismo. Sabi ko kapag hindi mo pa na-improve ‘yan, I will hang you in one of your cell towers,” Duterte said.
“Sabi niya, you can’t do that because there is no tower. The local governments are fucking it up, saan mo ako bibitayin?”
Cu apparently got in touch with Duterte following the latter’s threat to shut down telcos if dont they shape up.
He complained about the tedious process of securing permits to put up cell towers.
“We are suffering for many, many years for this, even sa past administrations,” Cu said, adding that it takes up to eight months to build a tower on top of the “miscellaneous fees” being charged for each cell tower.
Duterte said this was clearly corruption among local government units. He immediately ordered the Department of Interior and Local Government to focus cutting the red tape
