The final death blow: NTC recalls all ABS-CBN frequencies

The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) has recalled all frequencies of the embattled ABS-CBN Corp., seemingly putting the final nail in the coffin for the Lopez-led media company.

In an eight page decision dated September 9, the NTC directed ABS-CBN to return all assigned frequencies/channels assigned to them due to the absence of a valid legislative franchise.

“The denial of respondent’s franchise renewal application by Congress coupled with the denial of the respondent’s petition by the Supreme Court lead to no other conclusion except that the respondent had already lost the privilege of installing, operating and maintaining redo broadcasting in the country,” the NTC said.

NTC said ABS-CBN has no valid franchise to continue operating television and radio broadcasting stations nationwide.

The House of Representatives junked ABS-CBN’s application for renewal of its franchise on July 10.

ABS-CBN ceased operating its TV and radio broadcasting stations last May 5 upon orders from the NTC.

The closure of ABS-CBN’s TV and radio operations as well as other consumer businesses has resulted in the massive displacement of employees.
