Mel Velarde’s NOW gets provisional authority to operate mobile network

The National Telecommunications Commission has extended the provisional authority granted to NOW Telecoms Inc. to operate a nationwide mobile telecommunications system.

The grant of PA, however, is subject to a number of conditions including the infusion of additional capital of at least P1.9 billion.

The amount was based on the first two years capital expenditure of P6.3 billion in the rollout plan submitted to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

NOW Telecom has committed to spend around P15.9 billion for its nationwide expansion over a period of five years.

The NTC has also required NOW Telecom to speed up the installation of broadband data service in suburban and rural areas and that in each of the phases of project.

NOW Telecom is also prohibited from sharing or co-using its frequency with either PLDT/Smart, Globe Telecom, DITO Telecommunity Corporation, or any other entity without NTC’s approval.
