Sotto pointed out that PLDT-Smart and Globe Telecom have also built cell towers inside military camps using technology and equipment provided by Huawei, a Chinese smartphone and telecommunications equipment giant.
“Sabi ng iba, ‘Bakit daw sa mga kampo maglalagay ng cell site?’. Ang tanong ko nga sa kanila, ‘Saan ba nakalagay ang mga cell site ng Globe at Smart? Sa mga kampo rin, di ba? Bakit? Kasi yun ang pumapayag. Yung mga association, mga village, ayaw, kaya yun mga pwede,” said Sotto in an interview with DWIZ.
“Apparently, hindi ninyo alam, na yung Globe at Smart, ang backbone, Huawei. Yun din yun. Palagay ko pag narealize nila na dapat noon pa nila inimbestigahan ang Globe at Smart kung bakit ang backbone ay Huawei at bakit nasa mga kampo. Pag narealize nila yun, titigilin na nila ‘yun (probe ChinaTel),” he added.
The United States, Australia and New Zealand have banned firms from doing business with Huawei, the world’s leading maker of the equipment that powers cellphone networks.
Former Associate Justice Antonio Carpio warned that China, which has been “stealing” the country’s territory, could use ChinaTel to spy on the country and its citizens.
“Chinese law is mandating all Chinese companies, as citizens, to disclose to their intelligence services any information required by the intelligence service. That is a problem that the Philippines is allowing ChinaTel to install telecom equipment in military camps and the fact that we have a conflict with China,” Said Carpo.
“China is stealing territories such as the West Philippine sea and our maritime zones. We do not have that problem with Globe, PLDT, or with the Indonesians because we do not have territorial disputes with them. So, this is unique to DITO and ChinaTel. We have to be very careful because we are fighting to preserve our territorial maritime zones in the West Philippine sea and China is encroaching on our territory maritime zones,” Carpio added.
