Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) has asked the Energy Regulatory Commisssion to reconsider a directive requiring it to provide discounts amounting to P200 million to more than two million lifeline or poor customers.

Nevertheless, Meralco said it would still comply with the ERC directive in its October billing while its motion for reconsideration is pending before the agency.

Apart from this, the power utility giant paid the P19 million penalty imposed by the ERC for its alleged failure to explain to customers their billings for March and June as well as to comply with the mandated instalment payment arrangement set by the Commission.

ERC chair Agnes Devanadera said Meralco’s “neglect to provide accurate and timely information during this time of pandemic has created chaos and confusion to most of the electricity consuming public.”
