Globe considering ditching Huawei as US sanctions worsen

Ayala-led Globe Telecom may cut ties with Chinese technology giant Huawei, which has been been blacklisted by the US on national security concerns.

Globe lawyer Froilan Castro said they were already looking for a new technology and equipment provider after the US imposed new sanctions on Huawei.

Castro said Huawei currently supplies 80% of Globe’s technology and equipment.

The trade blacklist cut Huawei off from suppliers such as Google, which had supplied smartphones with the Android operating system and Google Mobile Services, such as Gmail and YouTube.

“Because of these developments coming from US and Europe, we have started discussions with non-Chinese telco equipment providers,” Castelo said.
