Covid shuts down 3rd mining firm in one week: Nickel Asia reports 19 positive cases

Nickel Asia Corp. of bilyonaryo Manny Zamora is suspending operations at its mine site in Surigao del Norte for two weeks after 19 employees tested positive for COVID-19.

In a regulatory filing, Nickel Asia said its subsidiary Hinatuan Mining Corp. (HMC) halted operations last October 27 in a bid

to contain the spread of the virus among its employees.

Nickel Asia said HMC conducted immediate contact tracing and isolation of close contacts of employees who contracted the virus.

According to Nickel Asia, the suspension of its Surigao operations would not have a significant impact on its financial results as HMC is already at the tail-end of its mining season and the last of its ore shipments have been loaded and the rest diverted to NAC’s other subsidiaries, Rio Tuba Nickel Mining Corp. and Cagdianao Mining Corp.

HMC accounted for 11% of the group’s total ore sales volume in 2019.
