Berna wants answers: Plantation Bay’s DOT accreditation hangs after anti-autism backlash

The Department of Tourism has demanded a written explanation from under fire Plantation Bay Resort and Spa as it decides on the fate of the resort’s accreditation.

The Cebu resort is in hot water after its resident shareholder and owner Manny Gonzalez had an online meltdown and shamed the mom of a child with autism who complained about the property’s discriminatory policies.

“Plantation Bay has recently applied for the renewal of its accreditation and we sent it a notice to explain, based on the incident, why their accreditation should be renewed despite possible grounds for suspension or revocation of accreditation,” Tourism Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat said in a BusinessMirror report.

“They have until December 17 to submit their explanation. Thereafter, DOT will make a decision,” she added.

Puyat earlier said penalties Plantation Bay would be penalized for its uncouth treatment of a customer and called in the Department of Justice for a parallel probe.

Gonzalez announced his resignation on Tuesday, hoping to protect the rest of the resort from the consequences of his boorish remarks and the online backlash and boycott calls that ensued.
