Aboitiz, Ayala, Lopez cleared to offer green energy

Six companies were approved by the Department of Energy (DOE) to supply power under the Green Energy Option Program (GEOP), a mechanism which shall provide end-users the option to choose renewable energy as their source of energy.

The approved GEOP suppliers as of December 20, 2020 are Bacman Geothermal Inc. (BGI), First Gen Energy Solutions, SN Aboitiz Power-Magat, SN Aboitiz Power-Res, AC Energy Philippines and Sparc-Solar Powered Agri-Rural Communities Corp.

Both BGI and First Gen Energy are controlled by the Lopez Group while SN Aboitiz is a joint venture between Aboitiz Power Corp. and SN Power of Norway.

AC Energy is the power arm of the Ayala Group. while Sparc-Solar issaid to be majority controlled by the group of Dexter Tiu of Pure Energy Holdings Corp.

The Renewable Energy Act of 2008 provides that the DOE establish the GEOP to further spur RE development in the country.

Under the GEOP rules, the DOE is mandated to conduct public consultations and promulgate the guidelines and procedures for the issuance of permits of the RE suppliers.
