Senator Sherwin Gatchalian appealed to local government units to cooperate with the Energy Regulatory Commission and Manila Electric Co. in allowing the conduct of onsite meter readings amid heightened restrictions under the re-imposed enhanced community quarantine (ECQ).
“We do not want a repeat of the confusion of the high electricity charges last year after several months of ECQ. That’s why authorities should prepare steps to avoid bill shock,” said Gatchalian, chairman of the Senate Energy Committee.
Gatchalian said there should be cooperation to help Filipinos affected by the pandemic, especially those who lost their jobs.
ERC released a statement last March 26 pleading to LGUs to allow Meralco’s meter readers to conduct actual meter reading in their respective areas of jurisdiction.
Meralco, on the other hand, was directed by the ERC to ensure its compliance to the prescribed health protocols to reduce the risk of getting infected with COVID-19 and this includes the wearing of the necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) of the meter readers.
