Glimpse of future? Environmental group welcomes MVP-Meralco’s move to drop Subic coal plant

An environmental group lauded businessman Manny V. Pangilinan’s conglomerate for shelving its plan to construct a new coal-fired power plant in Subic.

In a statement, the Power for People Coalition (P4P) said the Manila Electric Company’s (Meralco) took a bold step to call off the project, which involved two 300-megawatt generation facilities amid resistance against dirty power.

“We hope the shelving of the Subic project means Meralco is finally starting to see sense and would soon have more coal cancellations to announce,” said Gerry Arances, Convenor of P4P.

Greenpeace hopes a similar decision will be made for the controversial 1,200MW plant in Atimonan, Quezon.

A recent P4P study showed that one way to kill off future coal plants is to pressure banks to stop funding such projects that lead to environmental degradation.
